Chamaerops humilis, the European Fan Palm or Mediterranean Fan Palm, is one of the most desirable specimen palms. This hardy and widely adaptable palm occurs naturally throughout the Mediterranean region, from coastal areas to over 3000' elevation. It requires a well drained location, but is very adaptable to a wide range of soil types and is salt and drought tolerant. European Fan Palms perform  very well in USDA Hardiness Zones 8A-11, showing no injury at 16 degrees F and thought to be hardy to 0 degrees F. There is extraordinary variation in foliage color and habit. Color ranges from medium olive green, blue-green to silvery green. There are single trunk forms with clustering trunk forms most prevalent. Canopies have 15-30 deeply divided palmate fronds, 2-3 feet in length. They are slow growing to 10' in height and often are of a width equal to or greater than height. The growth rate allows them to be used as a shrub, specimen, or in a large container. They are presented both with full canopy and trimmed to expose the mat of fibers that clothe the trunks.
