Trachycarpus fortunei or Windmill Palm is one of the hardiest palms in cultivation. A native of  China, many populations exist at more than 5000' elevation. USDA  Hardiness Zones include 7B- 10B, with Windmill palms considered slower growing and shorter lived in hot tropical climates. It shows little or no damage to 10 degrees F and is thought to be hardy to 0 degrees F. There are many examples reaching to Canadian coastal areas, the British Isles and southern Norway. Windmills are adaptable to a wide range of soil types and withstand moderate to full sun exsposure. They have a single trunk habit reaching 20' in height with a canopy of 20-30 large fronds 3' in length. The dark green palmate fronds are deeply divided and split at the tips. The trunk is covered in a thick mat of dark fiber with protruding leaf bases. In the landscape, they are most useful as a small tropical tree accent.
